Lyrics Mehmet Akif Ersoy, 1921
Music Osman Zeki Üngör, 1930

Adopted 12 March 1921

İstiklâl Marşı (en. Independence March) is the national anthem of the Republic of Turkey. It became the national anthem on 12 March 1921, two and a half years before Turkey became a country. This song is meant for a motivational musical saga for the troops who have fought in the Turkish War of Independence, and an aspiration for the country's independence.

The words were written by Mehmet Âkif Ersoy, and its melody (music) was composed by Osman Zeki Üngör. The main theme about this song is about the homeland of the Turkish people, [their] freedom, as well as faith and praise for the[ir] virtues of hope, devotion, and sacrifice in the pursuit of liberty. They relate to the[ir] flag, human spirit, and the soil of the homeland. Part of the lyrics make references to the sacrifice of the soldiers, as well as the Turkish National Movement's victory of the War of Independence.

It is also used as the national anthem of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which was adopted in 1983 under Article II of the Constitution of Northern Cyprus.

Korkma! Sönmez bu şafaklarda yüzen al sancak,
Sönmeden yurdumun üstünde tüten en son ocak.
O benim milletimin yıldızıdır, parlayacak;
O benimdir, o benim milletimindir ancak.

Çatma, kurban olayım, çehreni ey nazlı hilal!
Kahraman ırkıma bir gül; ne bu şiddet, bu celal?
Sana olmaz dökülen kanlarımız sonra helal…
Hakkıdır, Hakk’a tapan milletimin istiklal.

Ben ezelden beridir hür yaşadım, hür yaşarım,
Hangi çılgın bana zincir vuracakmış? Şaşarım.
Kükremiş sel gibiyim, bendimi çiğner, aşarım,
Yırtarım dağları, enginlere sığmam, taşarım.

Garbın afakını sarmışsa çelik zırhlı duvar,
Benim iman dolu göğsüm gibi serhaddim var.
Ulusun, korkma!

O zaman vecdile bin secde eder, varsa taşım,
Her cerihamdan, İlahî, boşanıp kanlı yaşım,

Hakkıdır, hür yaşamış bayrağımın hürriyet;
Hakkıdır, Hakk’a tapan milletimin istiklal.

Fear not; for the crimson banner that proudly rippleth in this glorious dawn, shall not fade,
Before the last fiery hearth that is ablaze within my homeland is extinguished.
For that is the star of my people, and it will forever shine;
It is mine; and solely belongeth to my valiant nation.

Frown not, thee I beseech, oh thy coy crescent!
Smile upon my heroic nation! Why the anger, why the rage?
Our blood which for thee we shed shall be not worthy otherwise;
For freedom is the absolute right of my God-worshipping nation!

I have been free since the beginning and forever shall be so.
What madman shall put me in chains! I defy the very idea!
I am like the roaring flood; trampling my banks and overcoming my body,
I shall tear apart mountains, exceed the expanses and still gush out!

The horizons of the West may be bound with walls of steel,
But my borders are guarded by the mighty bosom of a believer.
Let it bellow out, be not afraid! And think: how can this fiery faith ever be extinguished
By that battered, single-fanged monster thou callest “civilization”?

My friend! Leave not my homeland to the hands of villainous men!
Render thy chest as armour and thy body as bulwark! Halt this disgraceful assault!
For soon shall come the joyous days of divine promise;
Who knows? Perhaps tomorrow? Perhaps even sooner!

View not the soil thou treadest on as mere earth – recognize it!
And think about the shroudless thousands who lie so nobly beneath thee.
Thou art the glorious son of a martyr – take shame, grieve not thine ancestors!
Unhand not, even when thou art promised worlds, this heavenly homeland.

Who would not sacrifice their life for this paradise of a country?
Martyrs would burst forth should one simply squeeze the soil! Martyrs!
May God take my life, my loved ones, and all possessions from me if He will,
But let Him not deprive me of my one true homeland in the world.

O glorious God, the sole wish of my pain-stricken heart is that,
No heathen’s hand should ever touch the bosom of my sacred Temples.
These adhans and their testimonies are the foundations of my religion,
And may their noble sound prevail thunderously across my eternal homeland.

For only then, shall my fatigued tombstone, if there is one, prostrate a thousand times in ecstasy,
And tears of blood shall, oh Lord, spill out from my every wound,
And my lifeless body shall burst forth from the earth like an eternal spirit,
Perhaps only then, shall I peacefully ascend and at long last reach the heavens.

So ripple and wave like the bright dawning sky, o thy glorious crescent,
So that our every last drop of blood may finally be blessed and worthy!
Neither thou nor my kin shall ever be extinguished!
For freedom is the absolute right of my ever-free flag;
For independence is the absolute right of my God-worshipping nation!
