The ʻAlalā or Hawaiian crow (Corvus hawaiiensis) is a special type of bird. It belongs to the crow family. This bird used to live only on the island of Hawaiʻi. You could find it in the western and southeastern parts of the island. Sadly, the ʻAlalā is now extinct in the wild. This means there are no more of these birds living freely in nature.

However, there is still hope for the ʻAlalā. There are two special places where these birds are cared for. These places are called breeding facilities. They are run by the San Diego Zoo. Here, scientists and bird experts help the ʻAlalā to have babies. Their goal is to one day release these birds back into the wild.
