Álvaro Marcelo García Linera (born 19 October 1962) is a Bolivian politician and sociologist. He served as the 38th Vice President of Bolivia from 2006 to 2019. He is a member of the Movement for Socialism political party. Before becoming vice president, he was involved with a group called the Túpac Katari Guerrilla Army in the early 1990s.

Political Journey

In the early 1990s, Álvaro García Linera was a leader of the Túpac Katari Guerrilla Army. He later became a key figure in Bolivian politics.

Becoming Vice President

García Linera was chosen as the running mate for Evo Morales in the 2005 presidential elections. They won, and he became the Vice President of Bolivia on 22 January 2006.

He strongly supported the idea of the government taking control of Bolivia's oil and gas industry. He believed that these natural resources were very important for the country's future.

Re-elections and Later Years

Morales and Linera were re-elected in 2009 and again in 2014. This meant they served multiple terms together.

In December 2010, García Linera shared information from WikiLeaks on his official page. WikiLeaks is a website that publishes secret documents. He said he wanted people to see what he called "barbarities and insults" from Washington.

He also supported the Law of the Rights of Mother Earth. This law aims to protect nature. Some private mining companies worried that this law might make it harder for them to operate. They thought it could allow the government to take over their businesses without paying them back.

In October 2019, García Linera ran for vice president a fourth time with Evo Morales. However, on 10 November 2019, both he and President Morales resigned. This happened after protests in Bolivia. They then traveled to Mexico.

In November 2020, García Linera returned to Bolivia. This was after his political party, the Movement for Socialism, won the elections again. Luis Arce became the new President of Bolivia.

Personal Life

On 8 March 2012, Álvaro García Linera announced his engagement to Claudia Fernández Valdivia. She was a news anchor for a Bolivian TV station. They got married in September 2012. They had two ceremonies: one traditional indigenous ceremony and one Catholic ceremony.
