Álvaro Marcelo García Linera (born 19 October 1962) is a Bolivian politician and sociologist. He served as the 38th vice president of Bolivia from 2006 to 2019. He is a member of the Movement for Socialism political party.
Political Career
In the early 1990s, Álvaro García Linera was involved with a group called the Túpac Katari Guerrilla Army. He was later held for a period of time and released in 1997.
García Linera became vice president alongside Evo Morales in the 2005 presidential elections. He believed that Bolivia should take control of its own natural resources, like oil and gas. He felt this was important for the country's future.
In 2005, García Linera wrote a book about how different groups helped the Movement for Socialism party rise to power. The book was called Sociology of Social Movements in Bolivia. Both Morales and Linera were re-elected in 2009.
In December 2010, Linera shared information from WikiLeaks on his official page. WikiLeaks is a website that shares secret documents. He wanted people to see what was being said about Bolivia by other countries.
García Linera supported the Law of the Rights of Mother Earth. This law aims to protect nature and the environment in Bolivia. He said it was not meant to stop important development.
He had thought about leaving politics in 2014 to teach and write. However, he decided to run again and was re-elected for a third term in 2014.
Linera ran for vice-president a fourth time in October 2019. On 10 November 2019, he resigned with President Evo Morales. They both left Bolivia and traveled to Mexico. In November 2020, he returned to Bolivia. This happened after the socialists came back to power and Luis Arce became the new president.
Personal Life
On 8 March 2012, Álvaro García Linera announced his engagement to Claudia Fernández Valdivia. She was a news anchor for a Bolivian television station. They got married in September 2012. They had two ceremonies, one traditional indigenous ceremony and one Catholic ceremony.
