Álvaro Mejía Pérez (born January 18, 1982) is a Spanish former professional football player. He mostly played as a central defender (a player who defends the goal from the middle of the field).

Club Career Highlights

Álvaro Mejía was born in Madrid, Spain. He started playing football at a club called Las Rozas CF. In 1998, when he was 16, he joined the famous club Real Madrid. He moved up through their different youth teams.

Starting with Real Madrid

In the 2001–02 season, Mejía joined Real Madrid's third team. Soon after, he moved to the reserve team, Real Madrid B. By the 2003–04 season, he joined the main Real Madrid squad.

He played his first game in La Liga (Spain's top football league) on January 24, 2004. His team won 2–1 against Villarreal CF. He also played in the UEFA Champions League (a big European competition) on March 3, 2004. Real Madrid won that game 1–0 against FC Bayern Munich. In May, he signed a new contract with Real Madrid until 2010. He played in different defensive positions for the team.

Later Years at Real Madrid

In the 2004–05 season, Mejía played in eight games for Real Madrid. Over the next two seasons, he played in 26 league games. He scored his only goal for Real Madrid on October 29, 2005. He came into the game as a substitute and scored just one minute later, helping his team win 2–0 against Real Betis.

Moving to Other Clubs

In July 2007, Mejía joined Real Murcia, a team that had just moved up to Spain's top league. He signed a four-year contract. He scored in his first league game for Murcia, helping them win 2–1 against Real Zaragoza. He played a lot during the 2007–08 season, but his team, Murcia, ended up moving down to a lower league.

After Murcia moved down another league in 2010, Mejía moved to France. He joined AC Arles-Avignon, a team that had just been promoted to Ligue 1 (France's top league). He signed a one-year contract. In January 2011, he moved again, this time to Turkey. He joined Konyaspor, a club in the Süper Lig (Turkey's top league).

On July 13, 2012, Mejía returned to Spain. He signed a one-year deal with UD Almería in the Segunda División (Spain's second league). After playing one season in Greece with Ergotelis FC, he joined Al Shahaniya SC in Qatar in June 2014. This team had just been promoted to the Qatar Stars League.
