A Look at Real Murcia's History
Real Murcia officially began in 1919 as Levante Foot-ball Club. But there are records of earlier football clubs in Murcia from 1903 and 1906. The name "Real Murcia" was given to the club in 1923–24 by King Alfonso XIII. "Real" means "Royal" in Spanish.
In 1925, a new stadium called La Condomina was opened. Real Murcia played their home games there for 82 years!
Climbing the Leagues
In 1929, Real Murcia first played in the Tercera División (Third Division). They worked hard and reached La Liga (the top Spanish league) for the first time in 1939–40.
The club's best position in La Liga was 11th place. They achieved this four times: in 1945, 1946, 1984, and 1987.
Real Murcia holds the record for winning the Segunda División (Second Division) title the most times, with eight wins! Their most recent win was in 2002–03. In that same season, they also reached the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey (King's Cup), which was one of their best runs in that competition.
Recent Times
After being promoted to La Liga in 2007, the team only stayed for one year. In June 2010, Real Murcia moved down to Segunda División B (the third tier) for the first time in ten years. But they quickly bounced back! They won the 2010–11 Segunda División B title and returned to the Second Division.
In 2014, the team finished fourth in the Second Division. They were close to being promoted again but lost in the playoffs. A few weeks later, they were moved down a league because of financial rules.
In 2019, Real Murcia won the Spanish Royal Federation Cup for the first time. They won it after a penalty shootout!
