David Vidal's Football Journey
David Vidal was born in Porto do Son, a town in Galicia, Spain. He had a modest career as a football player. He played as a central defender but never reached Spain's top league, La Liga. He only played 15 games in the second division, called Segunda División.
Starting as a Coach
After his playing days, Vidal began coaching in 1982. His first coaching job was with Cádiz CF, a club in the city he had adopted. He started by coaching the youth teams. Later, he became an assistant manager.
Managing Cádiz CF
Vidal became the head coach of Cádiz CF for the 1988–89 season. He had also been a temporary coach there in 1987. During his time at Cádiz, he coached a famous player named Mágico González. Vidal once said that Mágico González was "Technically better than Maradona!"
Coaching Other Teams
After his time with Cádiz, Vidal spent two and a half years coaching CD Logroñés in the top league. This team managed to stay in the top division during his time. After that, Vidal mostly coached teams in Spain's second division.
Time at Elche CF
On January 12, 2007, Vidal became the manager of Elche CF. However, on October 12, 2008, he was let go. This happened after Elche only earned two points from seven matches, which was not enough for the team.
Managing Albacete Balompié
Vidal took over as manager of Albacete Balompié on March 17, 2010. He helped the team avoid being relegated from the second division that season. Even though he helped them stay up, he was released from his contract.
He returned to Albacete during the 2010–11 season. But he was only in charge for about a month and a half. The team was later relegated to the third division after 21 years in higher leagues.
Later Coaching Roles
After two years away from football, Vidal became the coach of Tercera División club Xerez CD on July 13, 2013. However, the club was having serious money problems, so he left less than a month later. He continued to work with teams in the lower leagues.
In May 2017, Vidal helped Lorca FC get promoted to the second division. He had joined the team just the month before. But on June 5, his contract was not extended.
On June 20, 2019, Vidal was appointed manager of Racing Murcia FC in the regional leagues. He left the club in October 2020 for personal reasons.
