Ángeles Santos Torroella (born November 7, 1911 – died October 3, 2013) was a talented Spanish painter from Catalonia. She was known for her surrealist art, especially when she was younger. Her brother, Rafael Santos Torroella, was a poet and art critic. Ángeles married another painter, Emili Grau Sala. Her son, Julià Grau i Santos, also became a painter. She received important awards for her art, like the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts in 2003 and the Creu de Sant Jordi in 2005.

Her Early Life and Exhibitions
Ángeles Santos Torroella showed her amazing artwork very early. In 1929, when she was just 18, she presented her painting Un Mundo (meaning A World) at a big art show in Madrid called the Autumn Salon. The next year, she was given her own special room at the exhibition to show more of her art.
Exhibiting Around the World
Her talent was noticed internationally. In 1931, she had her own art show in Paris, France. The next year, she joined a group of artists called the Iberian Artists Collective. They showed their work in Copenhagen, Denmark, and again in Paris. In 1933, she was invited to exhibit her art at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, USA. She also showed her paintings at the Spanish Pavilion of the Venice Biennale in Italy in 1936. Her first exhibition in Barcelona, Spain, was in 1935 at Syra Galleries.
Life During the Spanish Civil War
In 1936, when the Spanish Civil War began, Ángeles Santos Torroella and her husband went to France for safety. She returned to Spain by herself in 1937. They were able to reunite later in 1962.
Her Artistic Style and Famous Works
Ángeles Santos Torroella's early paintings showed styles from expressionism to surrealism. Expressionism is about showing strong feelings, while surrealism creates dream-like or strange scenes. Later in her career, her art changed to a style called Post-Impressionism. This style often focuses on landscapes and indoor scenes.
Un Mundo - A Famous Painting
Her most famous painting is a large oil painting called Un Mundo (A World). She painted this unique, surreal planet when she was only 18 years old. This important artwork is now kept at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, Spain.
