Éamonn Ó Gallchobhair (born September 30, 1906 – died December 27, 1982) was an Irish composer. He was known for his traditional style of Irish art music. He believed that Irish music should be based on older folk tunes.

Early Life and Musical Training

Éamonn Ó Gallchobhair was born in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. His name is sometimes written as O'Gallagher. He began his music studies in Dublin. He attended the Leinster School of Music. He also studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music from 1927 to 1935.

A Career in Music

Ó Gallchobhair had a busy career in music. For a short time, from 1948 to 1949, he conducted the Radio Éireann Light Orchestra. This orchestra is now called the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.

In 1962, he took over from Seán Ó Riada. He became the conductor for the Abbey Theatre ensemble. This group performed music for plays. He also taught music composition to students. One of his students was John Kinsella.

Later in his life, he spent parts of the year in Spain and Italy with his wife. He passed away in Alicante, Spain.

His Musical Style

Ó Gallchobhair was a very active composer. He wrote and arranged many pieces of Irish traditional music. He wrote for many different instruments and groups. His music was popular during his lifetime. It was often played on the radio and at concerts.

Dance Dramas and Operas

Between 1935 and 1942, he created eleven "Dance Dramas." These were like ballets based on Irish folklore stories. One of his longest works was Catháir Linn (1942). It was a two-and-a-half-hour show.

He also wrote five light operas, or operettas. These were based on texts in the Irish (Gaelic). Some of these operas include Nocturne sa chearnóg (1942) and Trágadh na Taoide (1950).

Film Scores

Ó Gallchobhair also became famous for writing music for Hollywood movies. One well-known film he scored was John Ford's The Rising of the Moon.

Traditional Approach

Éamonn Ó Gallchobhair was a leading figure in Irish art music. He believed in keeping music traditional. He did not use new or modern styles of composition. He often said that Irish art music should be based on folk music. This idea was different from other Irish composers of his time. Composers like Aloys Fleischmann and Brian Boydell used more modern techniques.
