Éder's International Career
Éder Aleixo played 52 games for the Brazil national team between 1979 and 1986. He became very well-known during the 1982 FIFA World Cup. He played alongside football legends like Zico, Sócrates, and Falcão. Many people consider that 1982 Brazilian team to be one of the greatest international football teams ever.
World Cup Highlights
In Brazil's first game of the 1982 tournament, Éder scored an amazing winning goal against the Soviet Union. He flicked the ball up and then kicked it with incredible power and accuracy from about 25 yards away. He scored another goal in the 4–1 win against Scotland. For that goal, he tricked the goalie and then gently lifted the ball over him into the net. He also hit a powerful free kick against the crossbar in a game against Argentina. This shot led to the first goal of the match, scored by Zico.
Missing the 1986 World Cup
Éder Aleixo did not make the Brazilian team for the 1986 World Cup. This was because he lost some of his good form and fitness before the tournament. He also had an incident where he pushed a ball boy during a warm-up game for Brazil. He was sent off (given a red card) in his last international match against Peru in April 1986.
Éder was sometimes known for having a difficult personality. He didn't always get along with his coaches or teammates. Despite his great talent, he was also known for not always working as hard as he could. He sometimes had issues with discipline, which caused problems with his managers.
Éder's Style of Play
Éder Aleixo was mainly a left-footed player. He usually played as a wide midfielder on the left side of the field. He could also play as a forward or in a free role as a second striker. When he was at his best, he was considered one of the top players in his position in the world.
Skills and Nickname
Even though he wasn't the fastest winger, he was very creative. He was strong and had amazing technical skills and control of the ball. He also had an extremely accurate and powerful bending shot with his left foot. One of his shots was even reported to reach a speed of 174.5 kilometers per hour! This powerful shot earned him the nickname O Canhão, which means "The Cannon" in Portuguese.
He could bend the ball in any direction by kicking it with different parts of his left foot. He was not as good with his weaker right foot. Besides his powerful shots from outside the penalty area, he was also known for his accurate free kicks. He was excellent at delivering the ball from set-pieces and corners, and he could make accurate long passes and crosses.
