Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras, often called Palmeiras, is a professional football club from São Paulo, Brazil. It is one of the most popular clubs in South America, with millions of fans. The team plays in the Campeonato Paulista, which is São Paulo state's main league, and in the Brasileirão Série A, Brazil's top national league.

Palmeiras was started by Italian immigrants on August 26, 1914. It was first named "Palestra Itália." However, the club changed its name to Palmeiras on September 14, 1942. This happened because Brazil joined the Allies in World War II against Italy.

Since then, Palmeiras has won many national titles. They have won a record 12 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A titles, 4 Copas do Brasil, and other important cups. This makes them the most successful club in Brazil for top national competitions. Internationally, Palmeiras has won the Copa Rio in 1951, the Copa Libertadores three times (1999, 2020, 2021), and the 2022 Recopa Sudamericana. They have also won 5 interstate titles and 26 state championships.

Palmeiras is currently ranked high in both Brazilian and South American football. It was the first Brazilian club to win the IFFHS Men's Club World Ranking in 2021. Every FIFA World Cup and Olympic gold medal won by Brazil has included at least one Palmeiras player. This is an honor they share with their rival, São Paulo. While Palmeiras is famous for football, its sports department also competes in many other activities like basketball, roller hockey, and American football.

Club History

How Palmeiras Started

In the early 1900s, young Italian immigrants wanted to create a football team. They wanted a club that would represent the Italian community in São Paulo. At that time, football was becoming very popular.

Many Italian clubs existed, but they usually represented specific regions or focused on other activities. Football was growing fast, attracting many players and fans. The founders of the new club asked a newspaper that supported Italians in Brazil for help. They invited people interested in forming a sports club.

On August 26, 1914, 46 people met and founded "Palestra Italia." Ezequiel Simone became the first president. The Italian Consulate in São Paulo was interested because the club would help unite Italians under one flag.

After some challenges, Palestra Italia played its first game in Votorantim. They beat Savoia 2–0, winning their first trophy, the Taça Savoia.

Early Success and a New Home

In 1916, the team joined São Paulo's main sports league. They played their first official championship match. The next year, they were runners-up in the São Paulo State Championship. They also played against Corinthians for the first time, winning 3–0. This started a big rivalry. In 1920, Palestra Italia won the São Paulo State Championship.

The club continued to grow. In 1920, they bought Estádio Palestra Itália, their own stadium. It was updated in 1933, becoming Brazil's first stadium with concrete stands. In the 1930s, Palestra became a three-time state champion in both football and basketball. Fans would chant, "With the feet or with the hands, Palestra is the best in the land."

A New Name: Palmeiras is Born

In 1942, during World War II, the Brazilian government made a rule. It banned organizations from using names linked to countries like Italy. Palestra Italia had to change its name. They first changed it to Palestra São Paulo. However, this was still not enough.

The club faced pressure to change its name completely. If they didn't, they risked losing all their assets and being kicked out of the championship they were leading. The night before the final game of the state championship, on September 20, 1942, the club's leaders met. Dr. Mario Minervino famously said:

"They don't want us to be Palestra, so then we shall be Palmeiras – born to be champions."

The final match was against São Paulo Futebol Clube. Palmeiras entered the field carrying the Brazilian flag. They were winning 3–1 when a penalty was called in their favor. São Paulo FC's team left the field, protesting. Palmeiras won the championship. Newspapers the next day had a photo of Palmeiras with the headline: "A Leader Dies, A Champion is Born."

Copa Rio: An Early World Tournament

Taça Rio
Copa Rio 1951 Trophy

In 1951, a major international club tournament was held in Brazil. It was called the Copa Rio. Eight teams from different countries took part. These included teams from Brazil, Austria, Uruguay, Portugal, Italy, Yugoslavia, and France. Palmeiras was one of the Brazilian teams.

The Copa Rio was important because it was the first interclub competition with worldwide attention. It happened before the Intercontinental Cup. The Brazilian Sports Confederation organized it with help from FIFA. Palmeiras won the tournament in 1951. FIFA has recognized Palmeiras as the winner of this "first worldwide club competition." This tournament helped inspire later international championships like the European Cup (now UEFA Champions League) and the Copa Libertadores.

Even though FIFA has made different statements over the years, the Copa Rio was a big step for global football. It brought together top clubs from different continents. Palmeiras' victory in this tournament was a major achievement in football history.

The "Academy" Era

In the 1960s, Palmeiras played with such high quality that they were called the "Academy" of Brazilian football. This period was led by legendary player Ademir da Guia.

The first "Academy" team had amazing players like Djalma Santos, Djalma Dias, Dudu, and Julinho Botelho. In 1965, Palmeiras won the important Rio – São Paulo championship. They had big wins against rivals like Santos and Botafogo.

That same year, the Brazilian Sports Federation used the entire Palmeiras team to represent Brazil. They played against Uruguay and won 3–0. This showed how strong Palmeiras was. By the end of the 1960s, Palmeiras won the Copa do Brasil and the Roberto Gomes Pedrosa tournament, which was like the Brazilian Championship back then.

These wins set the stage for the second Palmeiras "Academy." This team included players like Luís Pereira, Leivinha, Emerson Leão, and again, Ademir da Guia. In the 1970s, this team won many titles. They were three-time São Paulo state champions and two-time Brazilian champions. They also won international trophies like Spain's Ramón de Carranza Trophy.

The 1980s: A Tough Time

After many victories in the 1960s and 1970s, the 1980s were difficult for Palmeiras fans. The team did not win any major championships. In 1986, Palmeiras had a good team. They beat Corinthians 5–1 and reached the state championship final. However, they lost to Inter de Limeira.

On October 29, 1986, Palmeiras fans adopted the pig as their mascot. Rival fans were chanting "pig" at them. Palmeiras fans responded by chanting "Come On Pig!!" This new nickname became popular.

Two memorable moments happened in this decade. In 1983, a referee accidentally scored a goal for Palmeiras against Santos. The game ended in a 2–2 tie. In 1988, striker Gaúcho had to play as a goalkeeper. He saved two penalties and even scored one himself! The 1980s ended without big wins, but the 1990s would bring much more success.

Palmeiras had not won a major trophy for 16 years. This changed in 1992 when they signed a sponsorship deal with Parmalat, an Italian company. This deal made Palmeiras the richest club in Brazil.

In the 1990s, Palmeiras achieved many great things. In 1993, they won the Campeonato Paulista, beating their biggest rival Corinthians in the final. The team had famous players like Evair, Zinho, Edmundo, and Roberto Carlos.

That same year, Palmeiras also won the Rio-São Paulo Championship and the 1993 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. In 1994, they won both the state and Brazilian championships again, beating Corinthians once more.

In 1996, Palmeiras won the 1996 Campeonato Paulista. They scored over 100 goals and had huge wins, like beating Santos 6–0. Players like Rivaldo and Djalminha were stars. In 1998, Palmeiras won the 1998 Copa do Brasil and their first official international cup since 1951, the 1998 Copa Mercosur.

In 1997, Luiz Felipe Scolari became the manager. He led the team to many important trophies, including their first Copa Libertadores in 1999. This is South America's most important club competition.

Palmeiras had a tough path to the final. They beat defending champions Vasco da Gama, their rival Corinthians (on penalties), and River Plate.

In the final, they played against Deportivo Cali from Colombia. Deportivo won the first game 1–0. In the second game, Palmeiras won 2–1 at their home stadium. They then won the competition in a penalty shootout.

Key players from this team included future World Cup winners Marcos, Zinho, and Roque Júnior. Other stars were Alex and Evair.

Later that year, Palmeiras played in the 1999 Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo against Manchester United from England. Palmeiras played well but lost 1–0 after a mistake by goalkeeper Marcos.

The 2000s: Ups and Downs

In 2000, Palmeiras played in four finals. They won the Rio-São Paulo Tournament by beating Vasco da Gama 6–1. They also reached the 2000 Copa Libertadores final again, but lost to Boca Juniors from Argentina in a penalty shootout.

After this, manager Luiz Felipe Scolari left. Palmeiras focused on younger players. They won the first ever Brazilian Champions' Cup. This qualified them for their third straight Copa Libertadores in 2001.

The Parmalat sponsorship ended in 2000. This made things difficult for Palmeiras. In 2002, they had a bad season and were relegated to the Série B (second division). However, they quickly returned to the top division in 2004.

In 2008, Palmeiras got a new sponsorship deal. They invested in new players and brought back manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo. This helped them win their 22nd Paulista Championship. They also finished 4th in the Brazilian Championship, qualifying for the 2009 Copa Libertadores.

In 2009, the club reached the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals but lost. They almost won the Brazilian League, but internal problems affected their performance. From 2010 to 2014, Palmeiras played their home games at the Pacaembu stadium because their old stadium was being rebuilt.

In 2012, Palmeiras won the Copa do Brasil for the second time. They beat Coritiba in the final. The team, led by manager Luiz Felipe Scolari and captain Marcos Assunção, did not lose a single game in the tournament.

However, less than three months after this victory, Scolari left the club due to poor league results. Palmeiras was relegated to the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B for the second time in its history in November 2012.

Palmeiras reached the 2015 Campeonato Paulista final but lost to rivals Santos FC on penalties. On December 2, 2015, Palmeiras won the 2015 Copa do Brasil. They lost the first game 1–0 to Santos. In the second game, Palmeiras won 2–1 with two goals from Dudu. They then won the trophy in a penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Fernando Prass saved a penalty and scored the winning one. Young player Gabriel Jesus was a standout, and the experience of Zé Roberto was also very important.

With this title, Palmeiras became Brazil's greatest champion with 12 national titles. As Copa do Brasil champions, they also earned a spot in the 2016 Copa Libertadores.

In the Campeonato Brasileiro, young player Endrick was a key player. Palmeiras reached the top of the league table in the 34th round and stayed there. Team Colors and Sponsors

Palmeiras' main uniform has green jerseys, white shorts, and green socks. Their first jersey was blue, honoring the Italian National team. They have also used blue shirts many times as a tribute. Fans are known for creating a "green stain" of fog and smoke when the team enters the field.

From 2007 to 2009, Palmeiras used a light yellow third jersey. In 2010, this became the second jersey, and a blue and white shirt became the third.

In 2016, Palmeiras extended its sponsorship deal with Crefisa and FAM. These companies pay Palmeiras a large amount of money each year. This makes Palmeiras' uniform one of the most valuable in South America.
