Ademir da Guia (born April 3, 1942) is a famous retired Brazilian football player. He played as a midfielder in the 1960s and 1970s. He is best known for his time with Palmeiras, one of Brazil's top football teams. Many people still think he is one of Palmeiras's greatest players ever.
He was a "playmaker," meaning he helped create scoring chances for his team. He was great at controlling the ball up close and making accurate passes. His nickname was "O Divino," which means "The Divine One." His father, Domingos da Guia, had the same nickname.
Personal Life
Ademir da Guia was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Football talent ran in his family. His father, Domingos da Guia, was also a famous football player. He even played for the Brazilian national team in the 1938 FIFA World Cup.
Ademir's uncle, Ladislau da Guia, was also a professional footballer. He played for Bangu Atlético Clube. Ladislau became Bangu's all-time top scorer, with 215 goals.
Football Career
Ademir da Guia played for Palmeiras for 16 years. He holds the record for playing the most games for the club. He is also the third-highest goal scorer in Palmeiras's history.
During his time with Palmeiras, he won many important titles. He won the Campeonato Paulista five times. He also won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, Brazil's top league, five times.
Unlike many other great Brazilian players, Ademir did not play much for the national team. He played in only nine matches for Brazil. Six of these were in 1965, and three were in 1974.
He even played in the 1974 FIFA World Cup. He got to play in the match for third place against Poland. Brazil lost that game 1–0. Ademir did not play more often because he was playing at the same time as other legendary players. These included Pelé, Rivellino, Gérson, Tostão, Dirceu Lopes, and Paulo César.
Ademir da Guia played his last professional game on September 18, 1977. It was a Campeonato Paulista match between Palmeiras and Corinthians. The game took place at Estádio do Morumbi in São Paulo. Corinthians won the match 2–0.
Political Career
After his football career, Ademir da Guia entered politics. In 2004, he was elected as a councilman for the city of São Paulo. A councilman is a person who helps make decisions for a city. He served from 2005 to 2008.
He was a member of the Communist Party of Brazil at first. Later, he joined the Liberal Party.
