Club Career Highlights
Marcos joined Palmeiras in 1992. He became the main goalkeeper in 1999 after the first-choice goalie, Velloso, got injured. Marcos quickly showed his amazing skills.
Winning the Copa Libertadores
In 1999, Marcos helped Palmeiras win the 1999 Copa Libertadores. This is a very important football tournament in South America. He made incredible saves, especially during penalty shoot-outs. He helped his team beat their big rivals, Corinthians, in the quarter-finals. After this victory, fans started calling him São Marcos.
The next year, in 2000, he faced Corinthians again in the Libertadores semi-finals. Once more, he led his team to victory in a penalty shoot-out.
Staying Loyal to Palmeiras
After his fantastic performance at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Marcos received an offer. The famous English team Arsenal wanted him to play for them. He even traveled to London to sign the contract. However, he decided not to join them.
Marcos later explained his choice. He said he would rather play in Brazil's second division (Campeonato Brasileiro Série B) with Palmeiras. He preferred this over playing for any European team just for money. This decision showed his deep loyalty to his club.
Later Years and Retirement
In 2008, Marcos helped Palmeiras win the 2008 Campeonato Paulista. On 21 September 2008, he played his 400th match for the club. He received a special shirt to celebrate this milestone. The shirt had "The best goalkeeper in Brazil" printed on it. It also listed all the titles he won with Palmeiras and Brazil.
Marcos announced his retirement from football on 4 January 2012. He was 38 years old. He decided to retire because of his age and many injuries. He is still one of the biggest heroes for Palmeiras fans.
International Career with Brazil
Marcos first played for the Brazil on 13 November 1999. This was in a match against Spain. Before that, he was a backup goalkeeper for Brazil in other tournaments. These included the 1999 Copa América and the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup.
World Cup Champion
Marcos became Brazil's main goalkeeper for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He played every minute of every game in the tournament. He helped Brazil win the World Cup for a record fifth time! He kept four "clean sheets," meaning he didn't let the other team score. He only let in four goals in seven matches.
It was later revealed that Marcos played the entire tournament with a painful, unhealed wrist injury. He bravely hid this injury from his coach.
After the World Cup
After the World Cup, Marcos faced many injuries. He lost his regular spot on the national team. He played only four more international matches after 2002. In 2005, he was called up again for the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup. He played one game in that tournament, which was his last for Brazil.
On 6 October 2005, Marcos announced his retirement from international football. However, he continued to play for Palmeiras. He later said he would be available for the national team again. He was on standby lists for the 2006 World Cup and 2007 Copa América. But he didn't make the final teams.
Playing Style
Marcos was known for being tall, athletic, and a strong leader. He performed well under pressure. He was also famous for his ability to stop penalty kicks. Many football experts believe he is one of the greatest Brazilian goalkeepers ever. His nickname, São Marcos, shows how much he was admired.
