Marcos dos Santos Assunção (born July 25, 1976) is a former professional footballer from Brazil. He played as a central midfielder. Marcos was famous for his amazing free kicks.
He played for teams in four different countries. He is best known for his time with Roma in Italy and Real Betis in Spain. Marcos also played for the Brazilian national team 11 times between 1998 and 2000. He scored one goal for his country. He was part of the team that came third in the 1998 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Playing Career: Marcos Assunção's Journey
Early Days and Time in Italy
Marcos Assunção was born in Caieiras, São Paulo, Brazil. He started his football career at Rio Branco and played there for two years. After that, he joined Santos. He scored three goals in 33 games for them.
In 1998, he moved to Flamengo. His great performances there caught the eye of Serie A club Roma in Italy. He joined Roma for the 1999–2000 season.
In his first year with Roma, he scored one goal in 21 games. He also scored in five UEFA Cup matches. Marcos played regularly for Roma for three years. He was known for his powerful shots from set pieces. During his second season, the team won the Italian league title, known as the Scudetto.
Success in Spain with Real Betis
In August 2002, Marcos Assunção moved to Spain to play for Real Betis. He quickly became a key player for the team. He scored many goals from his famous free kicks.
His first game for Betis was amazing. He scored from about 40 yards away with his weaker left foot! Betis won that game 4–2 against Deportivo de La Coruña. In the 2004–05 season, he scored eight goals. Betis finished fourth in the league, which meant they qualified for the UEFA Champions League.
In the 2005–06 season, Marcos played in seven Champions League games. He scored only one goal in the Spanish league that year. On his 30th birthday, July 25, 2006, he became a citizen of Spain. This was because he had lived in the country for a long time.
His last season in Spain was 2006–07. In August 2007, he left Betis. He said goodbye to the club and fans, explaining he would not join another Spanish team.
Later Career and Return to Brazil
After leaving Spain, Marcos Assunção played in the United Arab Emirates for two years. He played for Al Ahli and then Al Shabab. In September 2009, at 33 years old, he returned to Brazil. He signed with Grêmio Prudente.
A few months later, he moved to Palmeiras. He signed a one-year contract there. The manager, Luiz Felipe Scolari, chose Marcos as one of the team's four "leaders." In the Copa Sudamericana tournament, he made an assist. He also scored a long-range goal in a 3–0 win against Vitória.
In January 2013, Marcos left Palmeiras. Five days later, at 36 years old, he rejoined Santos. This was 14 years after his first time playing for them. He signed a contract until December.
In 2014, Marcos joined Figueirense. Later that year, he signed a short-term deal with Portuguesa. In September 2014, his contract with Portuguesa ended.
Playing for Brazil: International Career
Marcos Assunção played 11 games for the Brazilian national team over two years. His first game was against El Salvador. He scored his only goal for Brazil against Russia on November 18, 1998. Brazil won that friendly game 5–1.
Marcos was not called to play for the national team again after a difficult game against Chile. This was a qualifier for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, which Brazil lost 0–3.
Family Life
Marcos Assunção has two cousins who are also famous footballers. They are Marcos Senna and Márcio Senna. Marcos Senna played most of his career for Villarreal CF and even played for the Spanish national team.
