Marcos Assunção's Club Journey
Starting His Career
Marcos Assunção was born in Caieiras, São Paulo, Brazil. He started his football journey at Rio Branco and played there for two years. After that, he joined Santos, where he scored three goals in 33 games in Brazil's top league, Série A. In 1998, he moved to Flamengo.
Playing for Roma in Italy
After showing great skill at Flamengo, Marcos Assunção was bought by Serie A club Roma in Italy in 1999. In his first year with Roma, he scored one goal in 21 games. He also scored in five UEFA Cup matches. He played regularly for Roma for three years. During his time there, he became known for his powerful set pieces, which are special kicks like free kicks or corner kicks. In his second season, Roma won the Scudetto, which is the Italian league championship.
Success with Real Betis in Spain
In August 2002, Marcos Assunção moved to the Spanish team Real Betis. He quickly became a key player for them. He scored many goals from his famous free kicks. His first game for Betis was amazing. He scored a goal from 40 yards away with his weaker left foot! Betis won that game 4-2 against Deportivo de La Coruña.
In the 2004–05 season, he scored eight goals. This helped the team finish fourth in the league. Because of this, Real Betis qualified for the UEFA Champions League, which is a big European competition. In the 2005–06 season, he played in seven Champions League games. He only scored one goal in the Spanish league that year.
On his 30th birthday, July 25, 2006, Marcos Assunção became a citizen of Spain. This was because he had lived and played in Spain for a long time. However, the 2006–07 season was his last in Spain. He left Betis in August 2007. He said goodbye to the club and fans, explaining he wouldn't join another Spanish team.
Later Years and Return to Brazil
After leaving Spain, Marcos Assunção played in the United Arab Emirates for two years. He played for Al Ahli and then Al Shabab. In September 2009, he returned to Brazil. He signed with Grêmio Prudente.
A few months later, he moved to Palmeiras on a one-year contract. The manager, Luiz Felipe Scolari, chose him as one of the team's four "leaders." In the Copa Sudamericana tournament, he made an assist and scored a long-range goal. This helped Palmeiras win 3-0 against Vitória.
In January 2013, Marcos Assunção left Palmeiras. Five days later, at 36 years old, he rejoined Santos. He had not played for Santos in 14 years. He signed a contract until December of that year.
In January 2014, he joined Figueirense after his contract with Santos ended. In April, he left Figueirense and signed a short-term deal with Portuguesa in June. In September 2014, his contract with Portuguesa ended because he did not want to stay on the bench during some matches.
