Joelmir José Beting (born December 21, 1936, in Tambaú – died November 29, 2012, in São Paulo) was a famous Brazilian journalist. He worked in radio and TV, and wrote columns about economics. People knew him because he could explain tricky economic ideas in a simple way. He made it easy for everyone to understand what economists were talking about.
Personal life
Joelmir's family came from Westphalia, Germany. They moved to Brazil to work on a farm in Limeira, São Paulo. Later, they moved to Tambaú, where Joelmir was born.
He started working on a farm when he was only 7 years old. A kind priest, Father Donizetti Tavares de Lima, helped him move to São Paulo in 1955. The priest advised him to study sociology and become a journalist.
Academic life
Joelmir studied Social Sciences at the University of São Paulo. He earned his college degree, planning to become a teacher first. His main project was about how workers from Northeast Brazil adapted to the car industry. A famous professor, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, was one of his advisors.
Career
While at university, Joelmir looked for jobs at radio stations and newspapers. He found work at newspapers like O Esporte and Diário Popular, and at Rádio Panamericana (now Rádio Jovem Pan). He started as a sports journalist.
However, he decided to stop covering sports after a soccer game. He was a huge fan of the Palmeiras team. During one game, he showed too much favoritism for his team. After that, he decided to leave sports reporting.
Because his college project was so good, he was asked in 1966 to write a column for the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper. This column was about cars and the car industry. This was his chance to start working in economics. In 1968, he became the editor of the economics section. His daily column in that newspaper began on January 7, 1970. It was also shared with over 50 other newspapers across Brazil.
In 1970, he started giving daily economic updates on Rádio Jovem Pan and TV Record. In 1974, he moved to Rede Bandeirantes, working on both radio and TV. He joined Salomão Ésper and José Paulo de Andrade to start Jornal da Bandeirantes Gente. This was a daily radio show for Rádio Bandeirantes de São Paulo.
In 1985, he left Rede Bandeirantes to work for Organizações Globo, especially TV Globo. He had already been writing a column for O Globo since 1979. He also worked for the Globo News channel and Rádio CBN.
He moved his newspaper column to O Estado de S. Paulo on May 1, 1991. He stayed there until December 3, 2003.
Return to Bandeirantes
Joelmir went back to Rede Bandeirantes in 2004. He became an anchorman for Jornal da Band with Carlos Nascimento and Mariana Ferrão. He also returned to Rádio Bandeirantes, bringing back the original team for Jornal da Bandeirantes Gente.
He also hosted Canal Livre, an interview show on Sunday nights. He appeared on Band News TV and radio, and on Bandeirantes' BandSports channel too.
Death
Joelmir Beting was diagnosed with a serious illness called vasculitis. He was hospitalized on October 22, 2012. Sadly, he had a stroke on November 25, 2012, and passed away on November 29, 2012.
His final farewell was held at Cemitério do Morumbi, before his cremation.
