Île Bigras is the biggest of four islands in the Rivière des Prairies river in Quebec. These islands are called the Îles-Laval archipelago. Since 1965, all these islands have been part of the city of Laval.

The Story Behind the Name

Île Bigras is about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) long. It got its first name, Île Amesse, in 1817. This name came from its owner at the time, Louis Amesse. You might also see older maps that call it Île Boiret or Île Boisvert.

The island changed its name in 1890. That's when Émilien Bigras bought it. He then gave the island his own name. Émilien Bigras also owned the three other islands nearby. These are Île Pariseau, Île Verte, and Île Ronde.

Getting to Île Bigras

It's easy to reach Île Bigras thanks to its good transportation links. The island has its own train station, called Île-Bigras station. This station is part of the Deux-Montagnes commuter train line.

From the island, you can get to Downtown Montreal in less than 30 minutes. You can also reach Central Station in Montreal quickly. If you drive, there's a park and ride area at the station. This is a place where you can leave your car.

There's also a special ferry nearby. This ferry connects Île Bizard with Laval-sur-le-Lac. It's a fun way to travel and is less than 15 minutes from the island. The ferry runs during certain seasons of the year.
