Òrrius is a small village and municipality in Catalonia, Spain. It is located in the Maresme region, which is part of the province of Barcelona. This charming place is surrounded by other towns. These include La Roca del Vallès to the north and Vilassar de Dalt to the southeast. It also borders Argentona to the south and Cabrils to the southwest. Òrrius is a quiet spot with a rich history.

A Glimpse into Òrrius's Past

Òrrius was first mentioned in old documents way back in 974. Back then, it was called vila de Orreos. This name comes from a Latin word meaning "Barns." For a long time, Òrrius was part of the lands controlled by the Lords of Burriac.

In 1357, a big change happened. King Peter IV of Aragon decided to give control of the area to the Lords of Roca del Vallés. This meant Òrrius became part of their territory.

Exploring Òrrius's Main Sights

The heart of Òrrius village is the church of Sant Andreu, also known as Saint Andrew. This church was built in the 16th century. It features a late Gothic style, which means it has tall, pointed arches and detailed decorations. The church is shaped like a Latin cross. It also has chapels that were added later.

There is also a small, older chapel nearby. It is built in the Romanesque style. This style uses round arches and thick walls. The bell tower of the main church was added much later, in 1826. In 1981, a special discovery was made inside the church. People found old coins from the time of Count Berenguer Ramón II.

Another important building in the municipality is the church of Sant Bartomeu de Cabanyes. Records show this church existed as early as 1191.

Festive Events in Òrrius

Òrrius celebrates its main festival, called fiesta mayor, on November 30th. This day is the Feast of Saint Andrew. During this celebration, a special treat called peixos is eaten. These are small cakes shaped like fish. They are a unique food typical to the village.

Another fun event is the Festa de la Plantada del Maig. This festival happens on the second Saturday of May. Villagers carry a very tall tree around the village. Then, they plant it in the town square. It's a traditional way to welcome spring.

Understanding Òrrius's Economy

For a long time, the main way people made a living in Òrrius was through farming. This is called agriculture. However, things started to change in the 1970s. Òrrius is close to the city of Mataró. Because of this, many people from Mataró began to move to Òrrius.

Today, many people who live in Òrrius work outside the village. There isn't much industry in Òrrius itself. However, there is a small granite quarry. This is a place where granite stone is dug out of the ground. It is still being used today.
