Óscar Julio Vian Morales (born October 18, 1947 – died February 24, 2018) was an important leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He was the archbishop of Guatemala City, a big city in Guatemala. He became archbishop in 2010, chosen by Pope Benedict XVI. Before that, he was the archbishop of another area in Guatemala called Los Altos. He was born in Guatemala City, became a priest in 1976, and later became a bishop.

Early Life and Education
Óscar Julio Vian Morales went to school at Colegio Don Bosco in Guatemala. He also studied at the Salesian Seminary in El Salvador. He learned about philosophy, theology, and teaching at the Salesian Institute. He also studied at the San Carlos University of Guatemala.
Becoming a Priest
On August 25, 1976, he became a priest. He was ordained by Cardinal Miguel Obando y Bravo, who was an archbishop from Nicaragua.
After becoming a priest, he taught at many Salesian schools in Central America. These included schools in El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Panama. He was also the director of the Salesian San Miguel Institute in Honduras.
Further Studies and Roles
Later, Father Vian Morales took a break to study liturgical theology in Rome. This is the study of how church services are performed.
When he came back to Central America, he became a spiritual adviser. He also directed the Salesian Institute and the Salesian Youth Centre. He then became the director of studies at the Salesian Don Bosco School in Guatemala City. Four years later, he directed the Salesian San Miguel Institute in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
In 1990, he became the director of the Don Bosco Youth Center in Nicaragua. In 1994, he took over as director of the Don Bosco School in Guatemala City. He also taught about church services and religious education in many places across Central America.
Becoming a Bishop and Archbishop
Pope John Paul II chose him to be the Vicar Apostolic of El Petén on December 20, 1996. A Vicar Apostolic is a special kind of bishop who leads a church area that is not yet a full diocese. He became a bishop on February 1, 1997.
Between 1997 and 2006, he held several important jobs within the Catholic Church in Guatemala. He led committees on church services, social work, youth, and education. He also chaired the Education Ministry Commission for Central America and Panama.
In 2007, he was appointed Archbishop of Los Altos Quetzaltenango-Totonicapán. Then, on October 2, 2010, he became the Archbishop of Guatemala City. He officially took on this role on December 4, 2010.
Death
Archbishop Óscar Julio Vian Morales passed away on February 24, 2018. He died in a hospital in Guatemala City due to cancer.
After his death, Acting President Jafeth Cabrera Franco announced three days of national mourning. This meant that the national flag was flown at half-mast in public places and government buildings to show sadness.
