Östersund Municipality (which is Östersunds kommun in Swedish and Staaren tjïelte in South Sami) is a special area in northern Sweden. It's like a county, but smaller, and is part of Jämtland County. The main town and where the local government is located is Östersund. This town is also the main city for all of Jämtland County.
This municipality was created in 1971. Before that, Östersund was a city, and there were five smaller areas around it. They all joined together to form the Östersund Municipality we know today.
