Övertorneå (which means "Upper Torneå") is a small town in Sweden. It is located in Norrbotten County. This town is the main center of the Övertorneå Municipality. In 2010, about 1,917 people lived there.

Övertorneå sits right on the edge of the Torne River. Across the river, you'll find its twin town, Ylitornio, in Finland.

History of Övertorneå

The name "Övertorneå" comes from a time when the Torneå parish was split into two parts in the 1500s. Before 1809, the two villages on both sides of the Torne River were actually one big community.

In 1809, a new border was drawn along the Torne River. This border separated Sweden and Finland. From 1809 until 1917, this river marked Sweden's border with Russia.
