About İlker Çatak
Early Life and Education
İlker Çatak was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1984. His family moved to Istanbul, Turkey, when he was twelve years old. He finished school there before returning to Germany. He then started working on different film projects.
From 2005, İlker began directing short films and commercials. He studied Film and Television Directing in Berlin, earning his degree in 2009.
Starting His Film Career
His short film, When Namibia was a city..., first showed at the Hof International Film Festival in 2010. He co-directed this film with Johannes Duncker.
He continued his studies at the Hamburg Media School from 2012 to 2014. During this time, his short film Where we are was recognized. It was even a finalist for the 2014 Student Academy Awards.
Award-Winning Short Films
His graduation film, Fidelity, won a special gold medal at the 2015 Student Academy Awards. Both Where we are and Fidelity also won 'Best Short Film' awards at the Filmfestival Max-Ophüls-Prize. These early successes showed his talent for filmmaking.
Directing Feature Films
İlker Çatak's first full-length movie, Once upon a time... Indianerland, came out in German cinemas in 2017.
His next film, I Was, I Am, I Will Be (2019), won a German Film Award in 2020. It was also nominated for several other awards, including Best Director. Another film, Blurred Lines (2020), received the Bavarian Film Award for Best Young Actor in 2022.
The Success of The Teachers' Lounge
In February 2023, his movie The Teachers' Lounge premiered at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival. This film was a huge success! It won five German Film Awards, including Best Film and Best Director. İlker Çatak was also nominated for a European Film Award for Best Screenwriter for his writing. The movie was shown in many countries and was nominated for an Oscar in 2024.
Recent Achievements
In June 2024, İlker Çatak was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This is a big honor for filmmakers!
Earlier this year, in 2026, his newest film, Yellow Letters, premiered at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival. It won the Golden Bear, which is the top award at the festival!
