Ľudovít Ódor (born 2 July 1976) is a Slovak economist and politician. He was the Prime Minister of Slovakia from May to October 2023. Before that, he was the Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Slovakia from 2018 to 2023. He was the first Prime Minister of Slovakia who came from the Hungarian minority in the country.

Since July 2024, Ódor has been a Member of the European Parliament for Slovakia. He was part of the liberal Progressive Slovakia party's list for the 2024 European Parliament election.

Early Life and Education

Ľudovít Ódor was born on 2 July 1976. His family was ethnically Hungarian. He grew up in the village of Veľké Kosihy, which is near Komárno.

He finished his high school studies at the Hungarian-language Selye János Gymnasium in his hometown. After high school, he went to Comenius University in Bratislava. In 1999, he earned a master's degree in mathematics and management. Besides his native Hungarian, he also speaks Slovak and English very well.

Economic Career (1999–2023)

After finishing university, Ódor started working as an analyst for Československá obchodní banka in April 1999. An analyst studies information to help make decisions. In 2001, he moved to work for the Slovak Rating Agency. Two years later, Ódor became the chief economist for the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic. A chief economist advises the government on money matters.

In January 2006, he became a board member of the National Bank of Slovakia. He also advised the Prime Minister, Iveta Radičová, and the Finance Minister, Ivan Mikloš, from 2010 to 2012.

From 2015 to 2017, Ódor was the vice-chairman of the European Union's Network of Independent Fiscal Institutions. In February 2018, he became the vice-governor of the National Bank of Slovakia.

Ódor also helped create important groups. He co-founded the Institute for Financial Policy, which he led from 2003 to 2005. He also helped start the Value for Money Department at the Ministry of Finance. This department helps make sure public money is spent wisely. He also helped create the independent Council for Budget Responsibility.

Since 2016, Ódor has been a visiting professor at the Central European University. He is also part of the study council for the Hungarian College for Advanced Studies in Bratislava.

During his career, Ódor helped introduce a 19% flat tax in 2004. A flat tax means everyone pays the same percentage of their income in taxes. This change made Slovakia more attractive to foreign investors. It also helped the country become a "European tiger economy", which means its economy grew very fast. He also played a role in changing the pension system and helping Slovakia adopt the euro currency.

Time as Prime Minister (2023)

On 7 May 2023, the Prime Minister at the time, Eduard Heger, resigned. He had lost the support of the parliament. He asked the president to appoint a new government made up of experts, called a technocratic government.

President Zuzana Čaputová chose Ódor to lead this new government. Ódor and his team of ministers officially started their work on 15 May 2023.

On 19 July, the Interior Minister, Ivan Šimko, left his job because of disagreements with the police leadership. Ódor then took over the duties of the Interior Minister himself until a new minister was appointed.

A special election for parliament was held on 30 September 2023. This election led to a new government being formed by Robert Fico. Fico took over from Ódor as Prime Minister on 25 October 2023.
