Ōshikōchi no Mitsune: A Famous Poet

Mitsune held important jobs in the government. He served as a governor in different areas. These included Kai, Izumi, and Awaji provinces. When he returned to Kyoto, he was asked to help with a very important project.

Helping Create a Poetry Collection

Mitsune helped to create a famous poetry book. This book was called the Kokin Wakashū. It was one of the first official collections of Japanese poems. Being part of this project showed how important his skills were.

His Amazing Poetry Skills

Mitsune was a master of poetic matches. These were like poetry contests where poets would write verses. His poems were also admired when they were used with pictures. These pictures were often found on folding screens. People loved the quality of his work.

Mitsune's Influence and Legacy

At the time, Mitsune was as important as Ki no Tsurayuki. Tsurayuki was another very famous poet. Mitsune has a large number of poems in official collections. There are 193 of his poems in these important books. This shows how much his work was valued.

Many Japanese people still know him today. One of his poems is in the famous collection called Hyakunin Isshu. This collection features one hundred poems by one hundred different poets.
