′Azza (also spelled ′Azzeh, ′Azzah, or Alazzeh) is a small Palestinian refugee camp. It is also known as Beit Jibrin Camp. This camp is located in the city of Bethlehem, which is part of the Bethlehem Governorate.

′Azza is the smallest of the 59 refugee camps found in the West Bank and other Arab countries. It was created in 1950. The camp covers an area of about 270,000 square meters (or 27 dunam).

What is a Refugee Camp?

A refugee camp is a place set up to provide temporary shelter and help to people who have had to leave their homes. These people are called refugees. They often leave their homes because of conflict or other difficult situations.

Services and Support

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) helps the people in ′Azza camp. Workers from UNRWA provide services from the nearby Aida camp.

This is because ′Azza camp itself does not have its own medical or educational facilities. For this reason, it works closely with Aida camp to make sure residents get the help they need.

Where the Name Comes From

The camp is named after a well-known Arab family. This family came from a village called Bayt Jibrin. This village used to be west of the Hebron Hills area.

Population and Control

In 2005, UNRWA reported that about 2,025 people lived in ′Azza camp. The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics estimated the population to be around 1,750 in 2006. More recently, in 2016, UNRWA reported about 1,337 refugees and a total of 2,900 people living there.

Since 1995, the camp has been managed by the Palestinian National Authority. This authority is responsible for governing parts of the Palestinian territories.
