101 Second Street is a tall office building in San Francisco, California. It's located in an area called the South of Market district, right on Mission Street. This building is 108 m (354 ft) (about 354 feet) tall. It was finished in the year 2000.

The building has 26 floors. Inside, there's 388,000 sq ft (36,000 m2) of space for offices. One cool thing about 101 Second Street is its special glass-covered area. This area is four stories tall and is open to the public. It even has art from famous artists like Charles Arnoldi and Larry Bell. On sunny days, the front of the building can open up, connecting the inside with the street.

Building History

The idea for 101 Second Street started in the early 1990s. It was first planned to be a very tall building, over 40 stories high. This first design was created by a company called Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). Their design was chosen in a special "beauty competition" held by the San Francisco Building Department.

However, the economy changed, and there were problems with money for new office buildings. The original plan for the very tall tower didn't happen. The land was then bought by a company called Hines. Around 1994, the building was redesigned. The new design, which you see today, was mostly created by Steve O'Brien.

Later, other designers from SOM, Brian Lee and Craig Hartman, worked on the final details. They helped make the building look the way it does now. This includes the public area inside and the way the building steps down towards Second Street.

Public Space Plans

Before the events of September 11, 2001, there was a plan for a public open space on an upper floor. This space would have been 24 stories high! It would have given people amazing views of San Francisco. At the time, no other building in the United States had such a high outdoor public area.

But because of new safety rules and how the building would work, this idea was changed. Instead, the public space was moved to a lower area. This new public space is part of the glass atrium that faces Second Street.

Who Owned the Building?

101 Second Street was built by a team of companies. These were Cousins Properties Incorporated and Myers Development Company. They also built another nearby building called 55 Second Street.

In 2004, both buildings were sold to Hines Interests Limited Partnership. 101 Second Street was sold for about $144 million. Later, in 2014, Hines sold 101 Second Street to Invesco Real Estate for around $297 million.
