17 State Street is a tall office building located in the Financial District of Manhattan, New York City. It stands 42 stories high and offers great views of State Street and Battery Park. The building was designed by Roy Gee for Emery Roth and Sons. It is famous for its unique curved glass front. Since 1999, the building has been owned by a company called RFR Holding.
In October 2012, 17 State Street was affected by Hurricane Sandy. The storm caused water damage to the electrical equipment in the building's basement. Because of this, the building had to close for about two weeks for repairs. It was one of the first office buildings in the Financial District to reopen after the storm.
Building Design and Look
17 State Street is known for its special design. In 1988, an architecture expert named Paul Goldberger said that even though it wasn't a "great building," it was a happy mix of New York's building needs and cool architectural ideas.
Later, in 2008, another architecture expert, Carter B. Horsley, called it "the city’s most beautiful curved building." He thought it was even more beautiful than other famous curved buildings in the city. Its curved glass front makes it stand out in the New York City skyline.
