1818 Market Street is a tall, 40-story building in downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It is also known as 1818 WSFS Bank Place. This building is a skyscraper, which means it's a very tall building with many floors.

About 1818 Market Street

This building was designed by a company called EwingCole. Construction on 1818 Market Street began in 1972. The company that built it, Walters Associates, planned for it to cost around $50 million.

For many years, 1818 Market Street was the tallest building built in Philadelphia. This was between 1901 and 1987. During this time, there was an unofficial rule called the "gentlemen's agreement." This rule meant that no building should be taller than the hat on the statue of William Penn on top of City Hall. This rule lasted for 86 years! Today, 1818 Market Street is the eleventh-tallest building in Philadelphia.

What's Inside the Building?

1818 Market Street has over 981,000 square feet (about 91,100 square meters) of office space. This space is spread across 37 floors. The building also has six levels just for parking cars.

Many different companies have offices in this building. Some of the main companies that rent space here include ABN Amro, the American College of Radiology, WSFS Bank, Booz Allen Hamilton, eResearch Technology, Five Below, Merrill Lynch, Mitchell & Titus, Metrocorp, Northwestern Mutual, Swiss Re, and STV Incorporated.

Building Updates

1818 Market Street is currently the tallest building in Philadelphia made from strong, reinforced concrete. It has been updated several times. In 2003, the building had major renovations, which means it was significantly improved and updated. Before that, its outside walls were treated, which gave the building its special white color.

In May 2015, a company called Shorenstein Properties bought the building for $184.8 million. Later, in August 2019, WSFS Bank added their logo to the very top of the building. This happened after WSFS Bank bought and changed the name of Beneficial Bank, which used to have its main office in 1818 Market Street.
