The 1916 South American Championship was a very important football tournament. It was the first time countries in South America played each other to find out who was the best! This exciting event happened in Argentina. The team from Uruguay won the tournament, becoming the first champions of South America.

In 1916, the main football organization for South America was called CONMEBOL. At that time, only four countries were members of CONMEBOL. These four teams were the only ones who played in this first championship:
