The 1966 Georgia gubernatorial election was a big event in Georgia politics. It happened on November 8, 1966. This election showed some disagreements within the Georgia Democratic Party. It also gave the Georgia Republican Party a chance to win the Governor's job for the first time in the 1900s. In the end, Lester Maddox, a Democrat, became the Governor of Georgia. This election also helped Jimmy Carter, who later became president, become more widely known.
