The 1968 Atlantic hurricane season was the time of year when tropical storms and hurricanes usually form in the Atlantic Ocean. This period officially started on June 1, 1968, and ended on November 30, 1968.

The season began with a lot of activity, especially in June, when three storms formed. This made it one of the busiest Junes ever for hurricanes. The early part of the season saw the most storms. However, the season became much quieter towards the end. There were eight named storms in total, but none of them became a "major hurricane" (a very strong one). This shows that a busy start does not always mean the whole season will be busy. Hurricane Gladys was the most expensive storm. It caused over $6 million (in 1968 money) in damage as it moved across Florida, Cuba, and North Carolina.

What Storm Names Were Used in 1968?

The names listed below were given to tropical storms and hurricanes that formed in the North Atlantic in 1968.

This list was mostly the same as the one used in the 1964 season. However, some names like Candy, Dolly, Edna, Frances, Hannah, and Ingrid were new. They replaced older names such as Cleo, Dora, Ethel, Florence, Hilda, and Isbell. The name Candy was used for the very first time in 1968. Names that were not used are shown as gray.

Were Any Names Retired?

No storm names from the 1968 season were officially retired right away. However, the name Edna was later retired. This was because of a very strong Hurricane Edna that happened in the 1954 season. Because of that earlier storm, the name Edna has not been used since.
