The 1972 Atlantic hurricane season was a period in 1972 when tropical storms and hurricanes formed in the Atlantic Ocean. It officially started on June 1, 1972, and ended on November 30, 1972.

This season was not very busy, with only seven named storms. All of these storms were given names. This was also one of the few seasons where subtropical storms had their own separate list of names. The most important storm of the season was Hurricane Agnes. At the time, Agnes was the most expensive hurricane in U.S. history.

Name Retirement

When a hurricane causes a lot of damage or deaths, its name is sometimes "retired." This means the name will not be used again for another storm. The name Agnes was retired in 1973 because of the severe impact of Hurricane Agnes.
