Atlantic hurricane seasons 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986 |
The 1984 Atlantic hurricane season was a time when tropical storms and hurricanes formed in the Atlantic Ocean. This period officially started on June 1, 1984, and ended on November 30, 1984. Sometimes, storms can form outside these dates. For example, Hurricane Lili formed on December 12 and lasted until December 24.
This season was quite busy. There were 17 tropical depressions in total. Out of these, 13 grew strong enough to become tropical storms. Five of those tropical storms then became hurricanes. Only one of the hurricanes became a major hurricane. Most of the storms were not very strong. The only storm that caused a lot of damage was Hurricane Diana. Diana was the major hurricane of the season. It was also the only storm to hit land as a hurricane.

Understanding the 1984 Hurricane Season
A hurricane season is a period each year when tropical cyclones are most likely to form. These storms get their energy from warm ocean waters. They can bring strong winds, heavy rain, and big waves.
Types of Tropical Storms
- Tropical Depression: This is the first stage of a tropical cyclone. It has organized thunderstorms and a clear center of low pressure. Its winds are less than 39 miles per hour (63 km/h).
- Tropical Storm: If a tropical depression gets stronger, its winds reach between 39 and 73 miles per hour (63–118 km/h). At this point, it gets a name.
- Hurricane: When a tropical storm's winds reach 74 miles per hour (119 km/h) or more, it becomes a hurricane. Hurricanes are very powerful storms.
- Major Hurricane: This is a hurricane with very high winds, 111 miles per hour (178 km/h) or more. These are the strongest and most dangerous hurricanes.
