False rumors about a police shooting led to unrest, fires, and looting in Minneapolis, a city in the U.S. These events happened from August 26 to 28, 2020. They began after Eddie Sole Jr., a 38-year-old man, died. Police officers were trying to arrest him because they believed he was involved in a serious crime.
On August 26, around 2 p.m., Sole died as officers approached him. Soon after, false stories spread online. People heard that Minneapolis police officers had shot him. To stop the unrest, the Minneapolis police quickly shared video footage. This video showed what happened when Sole died. Later, a report from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner confirmed the video.

Understanding the Minneapolis Events
This August event happened while Minneapolis was still recovering. Just three months before, the city had seen large protests and unrest after the death of George Floyd. Wrong information caused people to continue to distrust city leaders and police.
What Happened During the Unrest?
On the night of August 26, 2020, many people were arrested. At least 132 individuals were taken into custody for violence and looting. About 77 buildings in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area were damaged. Five of these buildings were even set on fire.
To help keep the peace, Minnesota government officials brought in nearly 1,000 law enforcement officers. Also, 400 members of the Minnesota National Guard were called to help.
Curfew and Its Impact
An 8 p.m. curfew was put in place on August 27, 2020. A curfew means people must stay indoors after a certain time. In the first hour of the curfew, 30 people were arrested. The curfew lasted until 6 a.m. on August 28. During this time, over 100 people were arrested. About 80 of these arrests were for breaking the curfew rules.
The special declaration of a state of emergency and the curfew orders ended on August 31.
Aftermath of the Events
After the August events, some people faced legal consequences. Three Minnesota residents were found responsible for setting fire to the Target Corporation headquarters building. This happened on the night of August 26. Also, a man from Minneapolis admitted to hitting an officer with an object during the unrest.
