20 Lower Fort Street, Millers Point is a special historic house in Millers Point, Australia. It was built between 1841 and 1843 as a grand home for a wealthy person. For over 100 years, the NSW State Government used it as a place for people to live. Now, it has been carefully fixed up to look just like it did when it was new. This important building was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.

A Glimpse into the Past: History of the House

Millers Point is one of the oldest places in Australia where Europeans settled. It was a very important area for ships and sea activities. This house was built in the early 1840s. It was one of two houses built together, just like homes you might see in London. These houses were a big part of how the street looked back then. The NSW Department of Housing first started renting out this property in 1983.

What Does the House Look Like?

This house is a large, four-storey townhouse built in the Georgian style. It has six bedrooms, just like a big London home. It also has a separate kitchen and rooms for servants, plus an attic at the very top.

The front of the house has a grand entrance called a portico. This portico has Ionic columns and is shared with the house next door. On the second floor, there is a beautiful iron lace balcony that sticks out. Three French doors open onto this balcony. The house is made of stone covered in paint, and its roof is made of slate. The iron lace on the balcony is supported by a timber frame.

The outside of the house is in very good condition.

Changes Over Time: Modifications to the House

Some changes were made to the outside of the house around 1863. This is when the portico and the smooth stone-like front (called an ashlar facade) were added.

Why is This House Important?

As of November 2000, this house is considered very important because it is one of two special Regency-style townhouses. These houses are designed like London homes, with four storeys and a separate brick building for the kitchen and servant's rooms. The outside of the house is almost exactly as it was when it was built.

This house is also part of the Millers Point Conservation Area. This area is a well-preserved neighbourhood with homes and public spaces that date back to the 1830s. It's a great example of how people changed the land in the 1800s to build their communities.

20 Lower Fort Street, Millers Point, was officially listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.
