277 Park Avenue is a large office building in Midtown Manhattan, a busy part of New York City. It stands on the east side of Park Avenue, between 47th and 48th Streets. This tall building is 687 feet (209 m) high and has 50 floors. It is one of the tallest buildings in New York City.
The building officially opened its doors on July 13, 1964. Today, it is home to parts of JPMorgan Chase, a big financial company. Some of their teams, like the Investment Bank and Commercial Bank, work here. Even though some employees moved to another building in 2008, 277 Park Avenue is still owned by the Stahl Organization, the company that first built it.
Before this office building was built, an apartment building stood on the same spot. That apartment building was designed by a famous architecture firm called McKim, Mead, and White. Interestingly, the presidential campaign of John F. Kennedy once had offices in that old apartment building.
The land where 277 Park Avenue now stands has a long history. In the 1870s, the land was owned by Elizabeth Goelet Kip and her son. At that time, the New York and Harlem Railroad needed more land to expand the nearby Grand Central Depot. The railroad bought the land from Elizabeth Kip for $212,500.
