340 Fremont Street is a tall apartment building, about 440 feet (134 meters) high. It's located in the Rincon Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, California. This skyscraper has 348 homes spread across 40 floors.

Building History

In August 2005, a plan for the Rincon Hill area was approved. This plan allowed for a single, tall apartment building to be built at 340 and 350 Fremont Street.

Early Plans and Delays

The first design for the building was approved in 2006. It was supposed to have 332 apartments and 332 underground parking spots. However, the project faced delays because of tough economic times, including a big housing market problem and a worldwide financial crisis.

From 2008 to 2013, the project received several extensions for its building permits. In 2012, the building was redesigned. The new plan increased the number of apartments to 348 but reduced the parking spaces to 269.

Construction Begins

In 2013, a company called Equity Residential took over the project. They planned to start building by the end of that year.

Even after getting permits for demolition and construction, a group of neighbors tried to stop the project. They filed an appeal in late 2013. Luckily for the project, this appeal was denied in February 2014. This meant construction could finally begin!

Old buildings on the site were torn down starting in March 2014. The official groundbreaking ceremony happened on April 24, 2014. The main structure of the building was finished on October 22, 2015. People started moving into their new homes in mid-2016.

Building Design

The 340 Fremont Street building offers 348 different types of homes. These include:

  • 91 studio apartments
  • 119 one-bedroom apartments
  • 138 two-bedroom apartments

Parking and Features

The building has 269 parking spaces located on three underground levels. Many of these spaces use special "stackers" to fit more cars.

The building also has an 85-foot (26-meter) base, called a podium. On top of this podium, there's an outdoor terrace where residents can relax. The main roof of the building is 400 feet (122 meters) high. On top of that, there's a 40-foot (12-meter) section for mechanical equipment, making the total height of the building 440 feet (134 meters).

Remembering History

Before this new building, there were older structures on the site. One was a 3-story building from 1962, and another was from 1952. These old buildings were once used by groups for maritime workers, like sailors and engineers. To help remember this history, the new project includes a special display that people can visit. It tells the story of the area's past.
