What is 461 Fifth Avenue?
This building is used for both offices and shops. It stands out in the busy Midtown Manhattan area. The building is 376 feet (about 115 meters) tall. It has 28 floors where many different businesses operate.
History of the Building Site
The spot where 461 Fifth Avenue now stands has a long history. It has changed a lot over the years.
From Home to Shops: Early Days
Back in the late 1800s, this address was a private home. It belonged to the Misses Furniss. They were well-known for hosting fun musical events and parties there. They bought the property sometime after 1873.
Later, between 1911 and 1915, the house was torn down. An eleven-story office building was built in its place. In 1945, this office building was changed into a Lane Bryant store. Lane Bryant was a popular clothing store.
Building the Current Skyscraper
By 1988, the old Lane Bryant building was taken down. This made way for the skyscraper we see today. The new building was constructed by a Japanese development group. Raul de Armas from Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed it.
The new building was very popular. Within a year of being finished, 90% of its spaces were rented out. By 1992, it was completely full. For a while, a Pier 1 Imports store was on the first floor. Later, in 2007, a fashion store called BCBGMAXAZRIA moved in.
In 2003, the building was sold to its current owner, SL Green Realty. They bought it for about $62.3 million.
Design and Look of 461 Fifth Avenue
The building's design mixes old and new styles. It looks like it's made of stone, but it uses modern materials.
Modern Materials, Classic Look
The outside of the building uses special pre-cast concrete. This concrete is made to look like limestone. Limestone is a natural stone often used in older buildings. The building also has a setback near its base. This means the upper parts of the building are set back from the street. This design choice helps it match the height of older buildings nearby.
The top of the building has a copper mansard roof. This type of roof is also seen on other buildings in the area. It helps the skyscraper blend in with its historic surroundings. The building's design combines a 10-story base that looks like 19th-century architecture with an 18-story post-modern tower. This mix makes it unique.
