500 Marquette is a tall office building in Downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico. It has 15 floors and stands about 71.7 meters (235 feet) high. This makes it the fourth tallest building in the city.

The building was designed by Dwayne Lewis Architects and finished in 1986. For many years, the very top floor was home to the Albuquerque Petroleum Club. This was a special dining club for members only, which closed in 2007.

Building History

Early Years and Challenges

The 500 Marquette building was constructed by Cavan Associates from Phoenix. It opened its doors in 1986 and cost around $45 million to build. A large parking garage was also built next to it. This garage was meant to serve both the new office building and the nearby City-County Building. A special walkway was even built over 5th Street to connect them.

However, the office building faced money problems early on. In 1989, it went into foreclosure. This means the owners could not pay their loans, and the building was taken over by the bank. Later that same year, a company called EQ Office bought the building.

Later Ownership and Plans

In the 1990s, EQ Office from Chicago owned and managed 500 Marquette. Later, in 2008, Bernalillo County thought about buying the building. However, they decided not to because of a difficult economic time.

Building Design

Height and Structure

500 Marquette is 71.7 meters (235 feet) tall and has 15 stories. This makes it one of the tallest buildings in Albuquerque. Dwayne G. Lewis Architects designed the building with a unique look.

The main part of the building is an 11-story section shaped like a trapezoid. This section seems to hang over a four-story glass area called an atrium. An atrium is a large, open space inside a building, often with a glass roof.

Special Features

The building also has a five-level parking garage. This garage stretches south along 6th Street. You can see some interesting design elements on the building's outside. There are "setbacks" on the 8th and 10th floors. A setback is when a part of a building is built further back from the edge of the floor below it.

The building also has three balconies on its corners, from the 5th to the 7th floors. Right in front of the main entrance, there is a large bronze sculpture. It is 12 feet (about 3.7 meters) tall and was created by the artist Allan Houser. The sculpture is called "The Future—Chiricahua Apache Family."
