650 California Street, also known as the Hartford Building, is a tall office building in San Francisco. It has 34 stories and stands 142 meters (466 feet) high. You can find it on California Street, near the city's Financial District and Chinatown. This building is easy to spot from most parts of San Francisco!

What is 650 California Street?

This building is a commercial office tower. It was finished in 1964. The company that built it was Dinwiddie Construction Company.

How Was It Designed?

The building was designed by Edward Charles Bassett. He worked for a famous architecture firm called Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. It was built for Hartford Insurance, which was the first company to use the building.

The building has a special look. It features a modern lobby with high ceilings. The outside of the building has large, floor-to-ceiling windows. These windows are set into a square pattern made of white precast concrete. Precast concrete means the concrete parts were made somewhere else and then brought to the building site.

A Tall Building's History

When 650 California Street was finished in 1964, it was one of the biggest buildings in San Francisco. For a while, it was even the tallest building in all of California! It was taller than the Russ Building in San Francisco and the Los Angeles City Hall.

Over the years, the building has been bought and sold by different companies. In 2012, a company called Tishman Speyer bought it. They spent about $14 million to make it look new again. This included updating the lobby. In 2014, Columbia Property Trust Inc. bought the building.

Green Building Features

650 California Street is also a "green" building. In 2011, it earned a Gold Level certification from LEED. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

LEED is a system that rates how environmentally friendly a building is. It looks at how buildings are designed, built, and used. Getting a LEED certification means the building is good for the environment and uses energy wisely.

Who Works There?

Many different companies have offices in 650 California Street. Some of the main companies include Omnicom Group Inc., Access Communications, AppDirect, and Credit Suisse. Other companies like Analysis Group and Affirm also have offices there.

The building was also used as a fictional workplace. It was shown in The Doris Day Show, where Doris Martin's character worked.
