The Russ Building is a tall office building in the Financial District of San Francisco, California. It has a special style called Neo-Gothic, which means it looks like old European cathedrals.

A famous architect named George W. Kelham designed the building. He also designed many other important tall buildings in San Francisco during the 1920s. The Russ Building was finished in 1927. It stands about 133 meters (436 feet) tall and has 32 floors. It was also the first building in San Francisco to have an indoor parking garage!

For many years, from 1927 until 1964, the Russ Building was the tallest building in San Francisco. It was a very famous landmark, much like its similar-looking "twin" building, the PacBell Building, which is also about 133 meters tall.

When it was new, people thought the Russ Building was amazing. A magazine called Architect and Engineer even wrote that it represented San Francisco itself. They called it "The Center of Western Progress" because it was so important and modern for its time.

Over the years, many other tall buildings were built around the Russ Building. This made it less noticeable than it used to be. However, it is still a very special building.

The San Francisco Chronicle's architecture critic, John King, once said the Russ Building showed the exciting style of the Jazz Age. He described its fancy stone work, which looks like old Gothic designs, as it rises in steps to a crown at the top. The Russ Building is recognized as a California Historical Landmark.

For a long time, many big companies that invested in new businesses had their offices in the Russ Building.
