The 82nd Punjabis were a group of soldiers who were part of the old British Indian Army. This special group of soldiers started in 1788 in a city called Madras in British India.
At first, the regiment had soldiers from different places. But over time, it started to include more and more soldiers from the Punjab and North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) regions. Because of this, the regiment was given a new name in 1903: 'Punjabis'. Later, it became known as the 82nd Punjabis. After some more time, this regiment joined with others to form the 'First Punjab Regiment'.
