Forming the Regiment

The 82nd Regiment was officially started on December 16, 1777. It was formed in a place called Lanarkshire, which is in Scotland. Soldiers joined this new group to serve Great Britain.

Their Role in the War

The regiment played a part in the American Revolutionary War. This war lasted from 1775 to 1783. It was a very important time in history.

Journey to America

In August 1779, the 82nd Regiment was sent to New York. New York was a key location during the war. Later, in June 1779, they moved to a place called New Ireland. Their job there was to help set up and protect this area.

Southern Campaigns

The regiment then traveled south. In April 1781, they were sent to Wilmington, North Carolina. This was another important area for battles.

Yorktown and the End

A small part of the regiment, called its "light company," was involved in the Siege of Yorktown. This was a very famous battle. After the war ended, the 82nd Regiment of Foot was disbanded in 1784. This means the unit was officially broken up.
