The ninth millennium is a very long period of time that will begin on January 1, 8001, and end on December 31, 9000. That's a whole 1,000 years! It's so far away that it's hard to imagine what life will be like then.

What is the Ninth Millennium?

A millennium is a period of 1,000 years. We are currently in the third millennium (the 2000s). The ninth millennium is still many thousands of years away. Thinking about such a distant future helps scientists and thinkers imagine how our world might change.

Looking Far Ahead

It's very difficult to predict what will happen so far into the future. Many things could change, like technology, how people live, and even the Earth itself. Scientists often use what they know about space and physics to guess what might happen to our solar system over billions of years. However, specific events in the ninth millennium are mostly just ideas or predictions.

Events

Only one specific event is planned for the ninth millennium that we know about today:

  • May 28, 8113 CE: The Crypt of Civilization is scheduled to be opened. This "crypt" is actually a giant time capsule! It's located at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States. A time capsule is like a sealed container filled with objects and messages from one time, meant to be opened far in the future. The Crypt of Civilization was sealed in 1940 and contains many items from that time, like books, tools, and recordings, to show future people what life was like in the 20th century.
