About the A+D Museum

The A+D Museum shows how architecture and design shape our world. It features many different types of exhibits. These exhibits help visitors understand how buildings and objects are created. The museum also explores how design affects our daily lives.

History of the Museum

The A+D Museum was started in 2001. It was founded by two people: Stephen Kanner and Bernard Zimmerman. Stephen Kanner got the idea after visiting a similar museum in Helsinki, Finland.

The museum first opened in January 2001. Its first home was the historic Bradbury Building in downtown Los Angeles. This space was kindly given by Ira Yellin.

Over the years, the museum moved several times.

  • In 2003, the Bradbury Building was sold. The museum then moved to a temporary spot in West Hollywood. This was on the famous Sunset Strip.
  • In 2006, it moved to Wilshire Boulevard. This location was right across from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
  • In 2010, it moved again to another spot on Wilshire Boulevard.
  • In 2015, the museum moved back to downtown Los Angeles. It found a new home in a former warehouse in the Arts District. This move happened because of the Metro Purple Line extension.
