The Story of Biellese Football
How It All Started
The club was first started in 1902. Back then, it was known as U.S. Biellese. The team had some of its best times in the 1920s. They won the Second Division and moved up to the National Division. This league was like the top league, Serie A, at that time.
In 1930, the club changed its name to A.S. Biellese. After World War II ended, the club was restarted in 1945. They began playing in Serie B, which is a high league. However, they quickly moved down to Serie C. Since then, the club has mostly played in the lower leagues of Italian football.
A.S. Biellese 1902 Returns
In the summer of 1993, another local club called F.C. Vigliano had just been promoted to the Eccellenza Piemonte league. This club changed its name to F.C.V. Biellese-Vigliano. A few years later, in 1997, it became Biellese F.C.. Finally, in 2001, it took back the historic name A.S. Biellese 1902.
In the 2006-07 season, A.S. Biellese 1902 finished 17th in their group of Serie C2. This meant they had to play in special games to avoid being moved down a league. They lost these games and were relegated to Serie D.
During the Serie D 2007–08 season, the team played well and finished second in their group. They even took part in the Serie D playoffs, but they didn't make it to the next stage of the tournament.
In the Serie D 2008–09 season, Biellese finished first in their group. This meant they won direct promotion to a higher league called Lega Pro Seconda Divisione. However, the club decided to move themselves down to the Eccellenza league instead. In the 2009–10 season, they finished 11th in that league.
In July 2010, the club was officially closed down.
A New Start: A.S.D. Junior Biellese Libertas
In the summer of 2010, two smaller local football clubs decided to join together. These clubs were:
- A.S.D. Junior Biellese 2009, which played in the Terza Categoria league.
- A.S.D. Libertas Biella Cossato, which played in the Promozione Piemonte group A league.
They merged to form a new club called A.S.D. Junior Biellese Libertas. This new club took the place of the old A.S. Biellese 1902.
In the 2010–11 season, the new club played in the same league as A.S.D. Libertas Biella Cossato, which was Promozione Piemonte group A. They won this league and were promoted to the Eccellenza Piedmont and Aosta Valley league.
