Discovering the A. B. Hess Complex
This historic site is not just one building, but a group of four large buildings. They are all made of red brick and stand three to five stories tall. These buildings were built a long time ago, between the late 1800s and early 1900s.
What Were These Buildings For?
Each building in the complex had a special job related to tobacco and cigars:
- The R. H. Brubaker Tobacco Warehouse and the Koenig & Co. warehouse were built around 1880-1881. They were used to store tobacco leaves.
- The Franklin H. Bare Tobacco Warehouse was also built around 1880-1881, and it stored tobacco too.
- The A. B. Hess Cigar Factory was built a bit later, between 1905 and 1908. This is where cigars were actually made.
From Old Factory to New Homes
After many years of making cigars and storing tobacco, these buildings changed. They have been carefully updated and are now used as places for people to live. This is a great example of how old, important buildings can be saved and used in new ways.
A Recognized Historic Place
The A. B. Hess Cigar Factory, and Warehouses are very important to history. Because of their historical value, they were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important to American history.
The buildings are also part of a larger area called the North Shippen-Tobacco Avenue Historic District. This district is a neighborhood in Lancaster that has many old buildings connected to the tobacco industry.
