Albert Walter Merrick (born December 24, 1840 – died February 26, 1902) was an American journalist. He is famous for starting the very first newspaper in Deadwood, South Dakota. This newspaper was called the Black Hills Weekly Pioneer. He started it with W. A. Laughlin. Today, this newspaper is still published, but its offices are now in Spearfish, South Dakota.

About Albert Merrick

Albert Merrick was born in New York in 1840. He served as a soldier in the American Civil War. During his time in the war, he reached the rank of sergeant.

In 1880, official records show that Merrick was living in Deadwood. His job at that time was listed as an editor.

His Family

Albert Merrick was married to Rachel Margaret Davis. She was born in Wales in 1845. People often called her "Ray" Merrick. She moved to the United States in 1864.

The Merricks had at least five children.

  • In 1880, they had two children: Walter M. Merrick (who sadly died young in Deadwood) and Marie Blanche Merrick.
  • Later, they had another daughter, Louise May Merrick, born in Butte, Montana.
  • They also had another son, Albert Wilbur Merrick, born in Deadwood in 1882.
  • Their youngest daughter, Zeta Marguerite Merrick, was born in Deadwood in 1888.

Albert Wilbur Merrick followed in his father's footsteps and also worked in the newspaper business as a printer.

In 1899, records show that Merrick was listed as an invalid. He passed away in 1902. He was buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Deadwood.

Starting a Newspaper

Merrick started the Black Hills Weekly Pioneer newspaper in Deadwood in May 1876. The very first issue of the paper was published on June 8, 1876. This newspaper is still printed today and is now known as the Black Hills Pioneer.
