ARCNET (which stands for Attached Resource Computer NETwork) is a special set of rules, called a communications protocol. These rules help computers talk to each other in a local area network (LAN). A LAN is like a small group of computers connected in one place, such as an office or a school.

ARCNET was one of the first widely used ways to connect microcomputers (early personal computers) into a network. It became very popular in the 1980s, especially for tasks in offices. It was also used in embedded systems. These are special computer systems built into other devices, like industrial machines. ARCNET was first used in 1977.

How ARCNET Works

ARCNET uses a network layout called a "star-like topology." Imagine a central hub with cables reaching out to each computer, like the points of a star. This design is often easier to set up and maintain. Other early networks, like Ethernet, often used a "bus topology." This was like a single main cable with computers connected along it.

Sharing Data with Tokens

Original ARCNET networks used special cables called coaxial cables. These are similar to the cables used for TV antennas. ARCNET also uses a "token-passing" method to share information. Think of a special digital "token" that goes around the network. Only the computer holding the token can send data.

This token system is similar to how Token Ring networks work. Because only one computer can send data at a time, there are no "collisions." Collisions happen when two computers try to send data at the exact same moment. This makes ARCNET very reliable.

Speed and Uses

ARCNET has a maximum speed of about 20 Mbit/s. This is much slower than modern network types like Ethernet. However, because it avoids collisions, ARCNET is very dependable. This makes it useful for certain industrial jobs. For example, it can be used in factories where machines need to communicate without errors. It is also still used in some home automation systems.
