A Illa de Arousa is a special island in Galicia, Spain. It is the only island that is also its own town, called a municipality! You can find it in the beautiful Ria de Arousa, which is like a big bay.
About 4,951 people live on the island. The island has many different neighborhoods. Some interesting places to visit include the area around the lighthouse, the small island of Areoso nearby, and the Carreirón Natural Park. This park is a special protected area for birds like herons. The highest spot on the island is called the Holy viewpoint.
The only parish, or church district, on the island is "San Xulián da Illa de Arousa." A parish is like a local community area.
The island also has many lovely beaches. Some of them are A Area da Secada, A Lavanqueira, O Vao, Camaxe, Carreirón, Espiñeiro, and O Cabodeiro.
A Illa de Arousa has five ports where boats can dock. Xufre is the biggest and most important one. Other important docks include O Campo, Chazo, and Cabodeiro. These ports are very important for fishing and other activities on the island.
What's in a Name?
The name "Arousa" is very old. It was first written down as insulam Arauza in the year 899. Experts believe the name comes from an ancient European word *er-, which means "to flow" or "to move." This makes sense for an island surrounded by water!
