High School Star
Aaron Douglas grew up in Florence, South Carolina. He went to West Florence High School and played basketball there. He was so good that he became the top scorer in the school's history!
When he was a sophomore (second year), he scored about 16 points in each game. This helped him get chosen for the all-city team. As a junior (third year), he was the best scorer in the city, averaging 21.1 points per game. This earned him his first all-state award.
In January 1977, he scored an amazing 38 points in one game against Conway High School. This was a new school record! In his senior year (fourth year), he continued to shine. He averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds per game. He earned his second all-state award and helped his team achieve a great record of 22 wins and only 3 losses. After high school, he decided to play college basketball at Anderson Junior College.
College Days
Douglas started his college basketball career at Anderson Junior College. He played there for two years.
As a freshman, he was named the most valuable player of the Western Carolinas Junior College Conference Tournament. He was also chosen for the second-team all-conference. In his second year, he averaged 18 points per game. He led his team, the Trojans, to the National Junior College Tournament. For his great play, he received honorable mention All-American honors and was on the first-team all-conference. He was even picked to play in the Junior College All-American Game. In that game, he scored 10 points and made 12 assists.
After two years at Anderson, Douglas moved to East Tennessee State University. He played for the Buccaneers from 1980 to 1982. He was first recruited to play as a point guard, which means he was good at setting up plays and passing the ball. In the 1980–81 season, he led his team with 52 assists.
Later, he changed positions to shooting guard. This happened because a teammate was injured. As a shooting guard, he became well-known for his excellent outside shooting. Douglas studied physical education while in college. By the end of his time at East Tennessee State, he had played 55 games. He averaged 10.9 points, shot 49% from the field, 71% from the free-throw line, and grabbed 2.3 rebounds per game.
Playing Professionally
After college, Aaron Douglas played professional basketball in Australia. He joined the Hobart Devils in the National Basketball League (NBL) for the 1985 season.
During his time with the Hobart Devils, he played 16 games. He averaged 24.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. This shows he was a strong player even at the professional level.
