Abbas Abdi (born 1 October 1956) is a well-known figure in Iran. He is a journalist, a social researcher, and an activist who works for social change. He is considered one of Iran's most important reformists. A reformist is someone who wants to make changes to improve society and government.
Who is Abbas Abdi?
Abbas Abdi was born in 1956 in Tehran, Iran. He studied engineering at Tehran Polytechnic. After his studies, he worked in different government offices. He also helped manage the daily newspaper Salam.
Early Life and Activism
When he was a student, Abdi was very active in social movements. He was involved in student protests during the early years of the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Over time, he became a voice that questioned some of the government's actions in Iran.
In 1993, he faced difficulties because of his critical articles in the Salam newspaper. He was a strong supporter of President Mohammad Khatami's plans for reform. After 1997, he became one of the most important people in the reform movement. He continued to face challenges, especially after student protests in 1999.
Working with Public Opinion
Abdi later became the head of a company called Ayandeh. This company conducted surveys to find out what people thought about different issues. In 2002, Ayandeh conducted a survey about Iran's relationship with the United States. The survey showed that many Iranians wanted to improve ties with the U.S.
After this survey was published, Abdi faced legal issues and was held for several years. He continued to be involved in politics. In the 2009 Iranian presidential election, he was an important advisor to one of the candidates, Mehdi Karroubi.
